An incomplete copper alloy Late Iron Age or Early Roman Colchester one-piece type brooch dating to the period c. AD 25 - 60. The pin and the spring mechanism are missing. The brooch measures 39.33mm in length, 11.71mm maximum width, 1.66mm minimum width, is 14.39mm thick and weighs 7.43g.
The wings are thin and project from either side of the head, terminating in old breaks. They would have housed the sprung pin mechansim, now missing. The bow arches back from the head and tapers to the rounded foot. Approximately one quarter of the way down the bow is a circular rivet hole, retaining the remains of a copper alloy rivet. This may have been to fix the chord or an applied hook in place. There appear to be traces of a small ridge of differently patinated corrosion product running from the head to the rivet, possibly the remains of an applied element. The catchplate expands from the underside of the lower bow and terminates in an old break. The brooch is havily worn and exhibits a dark green patina, with brown patination marking the possible position of an applied hook.
