Copper alloy fragment of an early Saxon Hines type XV great square headed brooch. The fragment is broken at either end and is part of the chip-carved foot section of the brooch. The upper half is decorated with a decending chevron whilst the lower part has the brow and eye of a face mask, both features are common elements of a type XV brooch. The are no extant remains of a surface coating. The HER map for the findspot shows another fragment of great square headed brooch found at the same location. The two pieces cannot be directly compared, but they may well be from the same brooch. Circa 550-575 AD.
