BROOCH

Unique ID: PUBLIC-858636

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete cast copper-alloy brooch of La Téne III/Nauheim derivative type dating to the first century AD. The brooch is of one-piece construction; at the top of the object, the remains of the pin mechanism loop twice adjacent to the head of the brooch, before curling around under the head itself before being abruptly truncated as it begins to turn downwards. The head and body of the brooch are broadly sub-triangular in form, widening steadily to the mid-point of the object before abruptly tapering into the lower bow, giving the object a 'waisted' appearance. Underneath this, the lower body twists c. ninety degrees perpendicular to the main body of the brooch in forming a broadly triangular catchplate, though this itself is incomplete. With the exception of two rather crudely incised grooves on the outer body, the brooch is completely undecorated. Preserved relatively well with an even green patina, it measures 51.01mm long, 12.65mm wide at its pin mechanism and 9.32mm wide at its mid-point. At its head the brooch is c. 5.61mm thick, while being 0.69mm thick at its mid-point. It weighs 2.3 grammes.

Similar brooches have been catalogued by Mackreth (see Mackreth 2012, vol. II, p. 11, plate 8, nos. 3859 and 3864) who notes that their distribution is primarily restricted to West Sussex. He suggests a first century date for pieces of this type.
