A late early-medieval (Anglo-Scandanavian) copper-alloy harness pendant.
The pendant is lozenge shaped with two loops for suspension extending at the top from a ridged collar. Both rounded lugs are set a 90 degrees from the plane of the object. The pendant is openwork, with four broadly symmetrically arranged holes, and decorated with Ringerike style zoomorphic ornament. The right and left apexes of the pendant are each formed by a zoomorphic dragonesque head, shown in profile, with head crests, and probably biting onto a tail or a limb with gaping jaws. A lobed mane extends back from each head and meets at the lower apex. Their necks run down the centre of the pendant, connected transversely by a fillet. The reverse is flat.
The pendant measures 39.07 mm long by 38.16 mm wide. It is 2.85 mm thick and weighs 11.28 g.
Several parallels can be cited, such as Margeson 1997, 33, fig. 36; Williams 2007, 6; fig. 7; and on this database: YORYM-C6B07C, DENO-D73301, YORYM-01B933, SWYOR-64EC05, and NMS-A935B7.
There are also clearly closely related objects which have a different suspension mechanism: NLM-574F83 and NLM-3CD626. These could also be interpreted as strap ends.
