An incomplete copper alloy Early Medieval long bow brooch, either a small-long or cruciform type dating from AD 400 - 600.

The rectangular head plate has a raised central panel surrounded on the three upper sides by a headplate frame. The outer edge of the frame at the top and sides has punched semi-circular depressions forming a border, and with a small triangle of punches extending inwards from the base of each knop. The central panel (which does not extend to the top of the headplate) also has a similar border, but without the triangular extensions.

The three knops have a half-round double collar, and are then flat. Their shape is uncertain as all the edges are broken. They are integrally cast, with hollows behind the half-round parts. The bow has a flat panel at the top and bottom, each decorated with a single horizontal groove. The bow is faceted with a hollow reverse.

The foot has a flat panel at the top. This is divided into three areas; the upper two are plain, defined by faint incised lines, apart from a could of semi-circular punch marks at the sides. The lower area has bevelled sides and similar punches in vertical lines along the change of angle. Below this is a half-round panel with a central wide groove to match the knops. The lowest part of the foot is missing. The breaks are patinated and worn.

On the reverse is a single rounded lug behind the head, holding the corroded remains of an iron pin. There are the remains of a copper alloy catchplate behind the flat panel of the foot. The brooch is 88.7mm long, 60mm wide and 19.2mm thick. 32.95g. The headplate is 35.6mm wide without the knops. The bow is slightly bent so the foot plate projects forwards further than it would have done in use. The brooch has a smooth brown patina, with green corrosion where it is damaged.
