A complete gold stater of the Belgae, Chris Rudd's 'Cheriton Smiler' type dating c. 65-40 BC. Reece period 1, uncertain mint. Obverse; wreath sput by three corded lines leading to 'turf cutter' or anchor-shaped motif. Reverse; stylised and disjointed horse left with four tails, pellets above, 'crab' motif below. ABC p. 57, no. 755, Can Arsdell 1215, BMC 86-87. The coin is preserved in good condition, being well struck on a slightly irregilar flan.
Notes:
Chris Rudd notes that coins of this type are rare, their distribution mainly corresponding to central and south-east Hampshire.
