SOCKETED AXEHEAD

Unique ID: LANCUM-DC2416

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Cast copper alloy looped socketed axe dating from the Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age, c. 800-700BC. The axe is either a transitional axe or an axe of Type Sompting, Variant Cardiff II dating from the Early Iron Age. The axe is complete except for the missing loop. All surfaces are very worn and abraded. The patina is dark green with many patches of surface damage. The blade appears shaped, worn and re-sharpened. The axe has a circular or square mouth (unknown as only two images were submitted) and is decorated with three long moulded ribs that terminate in small flat pellets. This decoration is very typical of very late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age socketed axes.

NB: This is a rally find that was not seen by the FLO in person. Images and findspot information were kindly provided by the rally organiser.
