Silver Venetian soldino of Doge Nicolo Tron (1471-1473) with Doge kneeling left holding banner with L / M in right field on the obverse and the winged lion of St. Mark facing within a quadrilobe, an annulet in each angle, on the reverse.
The Venetian soldino, meaning "little shilling", circulated unofficially as halfpennies in England during the 15th and early 16th centuries, due to a lack of small change in the country at the time. They were nicknamed "galyhalpens" or galley-halfpence after the "galley-men" who imported them: the merchants on the Venetian galley fleet who came to England each summer.
