TREASURE CASE 2016 T662. A distorted annular gold hoop of Bronze Age or Iron Age date. The hoop is formed of cylindrical band of sheet metal that is flat in cross section and with no joins apparent. The band has been folded longitudinally to create a central ridge but the whole object is now bent and distorted. There is no decoration on either side of the band.

This object is similar to a so-called' dorsal muff' from an Iron Age torc (see NMS-C6DFC1 / 2007 T119 for comparison), but it may also an ornament (such as a hiar or dress accessory) of Middle to Late Bronze Age date however its form could not be immediately paralleled. There are vague similarities between this object and some hair locks of Late Bronze Age date, c. 1000-800 BC (see for example LVPL-5DFE32 / 2013 W06) but lock-rings are penannular in form and not annular like this example. Therefore, taking form into account, it is more likely that this is a dress accessory or Iron Age date.

Notes:

In terms of age and precious metal content this object qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
