The brooch is a fragment of a trumpet headed brooch, which dates to the 2nd century. It is made from cast copper alloy and decorated with enamel. Hattatt illustrates a similar example, No. 974

The lower portion of the brooch remains, therefore the pin, spring or hinge and bow head are missing. The break between the bow head and remaining fragment is not a recent break. In plan the lower portion of the brooch is a heart-shape, possibly representing a fly. The lower terminal of the brooch is moulded and is semi-circular in section. The body of the brooch is divided into three sub-oval cells. The two lower and larger cells are filled with blue enamel, the upper more central cell is filled with red enamel.

The reverse has a vertical abraded ridge, which was originally the catch plate.

The patina is a mid green colour. The brooches weighs 1.19g and measures 20.8mm long and 14.6mm wide.
