Cast lead-alloy spindle whorl, dating from the medieval period (AD1200-1500). The whorl is made up of a central biconical body with moulded decoration. This is very worn but may originally have been made up of a zig-zag line. Around the centre of the whorl is a projecting ring also with moulded decoration that appears to be in the form of a "rope" or "twisted cord" design. This projecting ring is 3.4mm thick. The central perforation has an internal diameter of 9.8mm.
Diameter: 23.4mm; thickness: 11.2mm; weight: 16.8g
Notes:
Spindle whorls are difficult to date precisely out of their original context, since they were used through most historical and archaeological periods. Although decorated examples are known of from Medieval and Post Medieval periods.
