An incomplete copper-alloy decorative mount in the form of a lion. It is in two joining fragments and missing one hind leg and tail due to old breaks. The lion is depicted walking left, with three toed/clawed feet and multiple notches on the backs of each leg indicative of the animal's hair or coat. It has a narrow and tapering triangular body, with incised grooves delineating shoulders and curved ribs. The head is raised, rectangular in form and missing its upper edge (ears?) due to old breaks. It has incised decoration comprising pointed oval eyes with central pellets, a small nose or snout and zig-zag lines demarcating the mane. A single circular rivet hole pierces the face at the mouth. The entire front face has a shiny gilding, the back face is flat and undecorated. This object measures 34.40mm in height, 43.63mm in length, 0.83mm in thickness, and 2.73g in weight.
This is an incomplete decorative mount in the form of a lion. The decorative elements suggest a probable Medieval date for the object, if not later, although no close parallel has as yet been identified.
