An incomplete Roman copper-alloy composite double-disc brooch (c. AD 100-c. 200).
This brooch consists of two conjoined discs. About one half of one disc is missing due to breaks. Each disc has a central hole, 2.3mm in diameter and each disc is recessed to accommodate enamel or decorative material. However, none has survived. The rear face is flat and plain and has the remains of a catch-plate close to the edge of one of the discs.
This brooch is corroded and drab green. The breaks are old and there is a fleck of iron staining on one side of the catch-plate.
Length: 27.3mm; width: 14.0mm; thickness: 3.0mm; thickness including catch-plate: 3.0mm. Weight: 1.89g.
Compare with similar brooches published by Hattatt and dated to the 2nd century AD (Hattatt 1989: 355, fig. refs: 214, 598, 1121, 1122, 1615 and 1616).
