A copper alloy cast dress fastener or clasp dating to c.1550-1650 AD. The upper face of the fastener consists of a central oval plate decorated at the centre with a possible lion's head or a face. On either side of the head are foliate scrolls which are connected by drapery under the chin and above the head. This pattern falls within three oval concentric borders that gives it the appearance of a cameo. On the outside edge of the plate there two decorative knops, one at 12 o'clock and one at 6 o'clock. There are three attachment eyes, two either side of the rectangular loop and one at the opposing end, these eyes would have allowed the fastener to be stitched onto the item of clothing. The rectangular loop at one end would have taken the corresponding hook of another fastener on the opposite edge of the garment to bring both sides together. The reverse is flat and undecorated. A similar example can be seen: CORN-628D0B. Similar to Read p175, No 664+663, class A, Type 8
