A heavily silver washed base silver antoninianus of Valerian (AD 253-260). Reece Period 12. RESTITVT ORIENTIS reverse type, uncertain mint. Sear (1988) 2896.
Notes:
Probably dating to the period of severe debasement of silver coinage, it became necessary to coat the base silver or copper alloy coins in a white metal from c. AD 258. This example retains quite a thick wash which is easily distinguished on the reverse.
