A fragment of copper alloy late Iron Age/ early Roman (AD 25-60) Langton Down type brooch, missing the lower bow and catchplate and the pin shank.
The wings, which are C-shaped in cross-section, were probably originally the characteristically cylindrical hood, encasing the spring which is now exposed. The wings span 23.9mm. Inside are heavily corroded iron remains, possibly of the axis bar rather than the spring. To the front iron staining obscures much of the wings and decoration is not immediately apparent. The bow projects from the centre of the wings in a hump with a convexly-curved upper edge, before dropping vertically to the old, worn break (6.6mm wide). The bow is decorated with six vertical grooves.
The fragment measures 25.4mm in length, 23.9mm in max.width and weighs 5.32g.
Langton Down type brooches are more common on the continent, particularly in the region of eastern France and western Switzerland, where they date to the first half of the 1st century (Bayley and Butcher 2004, p.150). However it is thought their period of use was probably longer as several have been found in post conquest deposits.
