A complete gold and garnet oval shaped finger ring of late medieval date, c. 1300-1500. The hoop flattens and widens towards the shoulders with a central ridge with a central ridge running along the length. The hoop is stretched and broken conducive with being caught and dragged by a plough which is the likely cause. The shoulders are decorated with filigree in the form of one large raised pellet in a raised surrounding band with smaller raised pellets surrounding indicating a 15th century date for the construction. The bezel is simple and plain, oval shaped in plan with pie dished profile with a cabochon shaped dark purple-red gemstone with a bubble and black mineral inclusions indicating an Almandine or Almandine dominated Garnet (Hall 2012, 59). The dark colour likely means that the back of the garnet is flat, a hollow shape would have led to a lighter setting. Similar rings can be found in Egan and Pritchard 1991, no.1613 and 1614, although the shoulders are much thinner on these examples and there is no filigree decoration. The ring is also similar to NM.117. p.46 in Mills. N. 2003. Medieval Artefacts. Witham (Essex): Greenlight Publishing. The length is 35mm, the width is 22mm thickness 4mm and the weight 8.32g. Egan. G, and Pritchard. F. 1991. Dress Accessories: Medieval Finds from Excavations in London. London: The Stationary Office.
