Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with a moulded aperture of diameter c.11mm, Walton Rogers form A1. Patinated, with the hole subsequently distorted by the forceful insertion of a straight-sided object. This object is perhaps a cast copy of a cattle femur caput whorl, a principally early medieval type. Though of a form lending itself to casting in an open mould, this example has an off-centre aperture and might have been discarded before use after an inept attempt to produce a heavier version of the bone whorl. The aperture size may suggest an Anglo-Scandinavian rather than an earlier date. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-1000.
