An incomplete Roman copper-alloy and enamelled flat disc brooch (AD 80-250).
The pin and part of the catch-plate are missing.
The plate is circular in plan. It has a plain border and a hexactinal pattern (a star shape) with circular lobes at each point. At the centre there is raised copper alloy pellet. The field surrounding the central pellet contains remnants of degraded enamel now coloured reddish brown. The lobes have enamel now reddish brown, although the enamel in one lobe is missing. The field formed by the border and the arms of the star are filled with green enamel. The rear face has a 'D'-shaped pin-lug and a catch-plate. These are on the same alignment. The pin-lug, axis bar and spring mechanism are corroded. A fresh break beneath the pin-lug indicates that the brooch possessed an internal chord. The catch-plate has a fresh break. Consequently, the curled-over part the secured the pin-tip is missing. To one side of the catch-plate is a deposit of corroded iron.
The copper-alloy part of this brooch is generally brown and the rear face has multiple linear striations, possibly file marks.
Diameter: 19.9mm; thickness: 1.9mm; thickness including pin-lugs: 6.3mm; height of pin-lug: 5.1mm; width of pin-lug and spring mechanism: 7.0mm; height of catch-plate: 8.6mm; width of catch-plate: 2.1mm. Weight: 4.10g.
Similar brooches have been published (Hattatt 1989: 344, fig. 203, refs: 118, 518 and 1409). In Roman Brooch Timeline (2007), Worrell dates flat enamelled disc brooches to AD 80-250.
