An incomplete Medieval silver halfpenny of Edward I (1272-1307), minted at Bristol, 1280-1282 (Withers 2001, 53, Type 1; North 1991: 32, ref: 1045/1).
Obverse: +EDWR (crescent) ANGL DNS hYB (barred A, composite S, wedge-tailed R); Crowned bust facing with a trifoliate crown and wedged drapery. Ornaments: pearl to left, spearhead to right
Reverse: ANGL/ABR/ISTO/LLR (barred A, composite S, wedge-tailed R); Long cross dividing the inscription with three pellets in each quadrant
Diameter: 15.1mm. Weight: 0.65g. DA=12:6.
This coin has an unusual reverse inscription and Paul Withers has commented that the coin is an unusual curiosity.
The coin has been turned in the dies and been struck again.
