A cast lead alloy token of later medieval to post-medieval date, circa (AD1400-1800). The token is broadly sub-circular in plan. The obverse has a pellet encircled by a raised rim with some raised ribs emanating from it to the edge of the token. This is a Powell type 3. The wear and abrasion on the original surface makes it difficult to establish the original design. The reverse face is undecorated. The token has a cream coloured patina across all surfaces. The obverse is convex and the reverse is flat.
Lead tokens had a wide variety of potential uses such as use as tallies, gaming pieces, tickets, weights, etc. and are believed to have been locally produced; they are therefore difficult to date precisely. Those carrying initials are generally deemed to be Post Medieval in date (1500-1850AD), those which seem to mimic Medieval penny designs are deemed to be Medieval, the remainder which carry stylised designs remain difficult to date but the majority are probably Post Medieval in date c.1500-1800.
The token measures 18.3mm diameter is 2.2mm thick and weighs 4.5grams.
