MOUNT

Unique ID: CORN-49A7FD

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Pair of cast tinned copper alloy mounts, likely to be belt stiffeners, in the form of extended fleurs de lis, with two integral pointed lugs at the back. At the wider end there is a trefoil terminal with rounded bifid knops on either side of a narrower central pointed knop. At the narrower end of the mount is a pointed terminal with slightly expanded bifid knops at either side which appear as a collar. The centre of each mount expands into a pear-shaped body between the terminals. Much of the tinning survives on the larger mount, but there are patches at the edges of the upper face of the smaller mount, but this has not survived elsewhere. At the back of the larger mount the two integral lugs survive, and are 10 mm long, but the two lugs on the back of the smaller mount are broken and about 5 mm long.

Read (2001) illustrates similar mounts with trefoil terminals on pages 35-6, figs.20-21, nos.292 & 316, which are both dated from the 17th century.

Notes:

The measurements below are for the larger example from the pair.
