A rim sherd of a wheel-thrown ceramic Black Burnished Ware (Type BB2) jar of Roman date, circa AD 120 - 250. The fabric is dark blackish-grey in colour with a hard and gritty texture and black burnished outer surface. Abundant rounded quartz temper is present within the fabric.
The fragment is 51.9mm long, 30.2mm wide, 9.8mm thick and weighs 22.9g.
Overall diameter: 16cm (projected using rim chart); approx.11% remaining.
BB2 wares were produced at sites around the Thames estuary (Kent and Essex) and distributed in south-east England and in northern Britain during the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.
