MINIATURE OBJECT

Unique ID: HAMP-79CA8A

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A probably Roman lead votive model or miniature object in the form of an axehead, of possible 2nd to 4th century AD date (I.M.Stead and V.Rigby, 1986, p.136).
The object is trapezoidal in plan and triangular in profile, increasing in thickness from the "cutting edge" (13.2x0.9mm) to the "attachment end" (10.3x6.5mm), where there is a vertical shaft hole oval in shape (4.5x2.0mm).
The object has been formed by folding a piece of lead back on itself. As a result one face is much thinner and this is apparent around the shaft hole (off-centre) where loss of metal has occurred. The "cutting edge" is rather jagged.
The metal is a creamy-white in colour with a light grey patch (recent damage) to one side of the shaft hole. The object measures 21.2mm in max.length, 13.2 in max.width, 6.5mm in max.thickness and weighs 6.89g.
Other examples of this type of object on the PAS database are LEIC-751012, BH-6D7895 and LIN-484704.
