A complete lead weight or spindle whorl of uncertain date. The object is circular with a flat base and top, rounded sides and a perforation in the centre. All surfaces are worn and appear to be undecorated.
The metal is very worn and creamy-grey in colour . The object is 25.9 mm in diameter, 7.2 mm thick and weighs 25.9 g. The perforation is 7.2 mm in diameter.
Lead spindle whorls and weights were commonly used from the Iron Age through to the post-medieval period and are difficult to date with any certainty without supporting archaeological context. The function of such objects is also difficult to determine as the forms are common and may have served as spindle whorls or weights used for fishing or goods.
