A sherd from the rim of a large Post Medieval ceramic vessel, probably a fragment of a Wrenthorpe Black Ware, produced in Wrenthorpe near Wakefield and dating from the seventeenth or early eighteenth century, AD 1600-1770. The vessel would have had a rim diameter of about 20cm. The rim is rounded and everted.
The glaze is on the inner face only and is very glossy and black. The fabric is fine grained and very hard. Where fresh breaks have occurred, it can be seen to be of a dark red colour. There are sparse quartzite and mica inclusions. The sherd is 76mm long, 32.2mm wide and 10.2mm thick. 51.61g.
Black Wares were a development of Cistercian Wares and were made in Wrenthorpe from the late 16th century. The industry had declined by AD 1770.
