A medieval anthropomorphic mount dating to the period c. AD 1150 - 1250. The mount is copper alloy which has been gilded and enamelled. Traces of gilding survive on both front and back. The head is oval with two recesses to indicate the eyes. The recesses may have contained enamel, now lost. The neck widens into the shoulders, whcih in turn extend into the veritcal sides of the body. The body exhibits two circular perforations positioned on the long axis. It exhibits six recesses containing enamel. The outer four contain enamel which is now dark blue, although chips in th surface show red beneath. The middle two recesses contain enamel which is now turquoise.
Enamelled mounts of this type are probable products of the Limoges industry. They were made for attachment to a q reliquary, box or cross and represent saints or apostles. Similar examples are discussed by Cherry, J, 2001, p. 41 - 42.
The mount measures 48.91mm in length, 21.12mm maximum width, 7.16mm minimum width, 9.56mm maximum thickness, 1.73mm minimum thickness and weighs 15.21g.
