A group of five post-medieval lead alloy circular uniface tokens (c. 1400-1600). The tokens are thick and circular save for (d) which is thinner, one side of which has an uneven design upon it. Three (A. - C.) are a cross quadrant designs (Powell type 14a), (D. + E.) are a cross quadrant designs with probable pellets in each quarter (Powell type 14b). The tokens are mostly a light off white-brown colour with occasional patches of light brown specs.

Measurements:

Token Diameter Thickness Weight Class
A 17.76mm 5.27mm 10.14g 14a
B 20.83mm 6.26mm 11.68g 14a
C 16.46mm 4.8mm 6.71g 14a
D 20.55mm 2.82mm 5.58g 14b
E 19.78mm 5.89mm 12.55g 14b

Discussion:

Lead tokens had a wide variety of potential uses such as tallies, gaming pieces, tickets, weights, etc. and are believed to have been locally produced; they are therefore difficult to date precisely. Those carrying initials are generally deemed to be post-Medieval in date (c.1500-1850), those which seem to mimic Medieval penny designs are deemed to be late medieval or early post-medieval in date, c. 1400-1600 (Fletcher 2005, 41-45). This group is likely to fit with the 15th or 16th century

The Powell classification system, in which there are over 30 categories, attempts to classify these leaden tokens according to the designs featured on each face, but it does not assign any chronology. Using this the entire group fits Powells class 14, with some variaiton in sub classes.
