CANNON BALL

Unique ID: LVPL-E1DC37

Object type certainty: Possibly
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A possible demi culverin iron cannon ball c. 1600-1830. The ball measures 10.66cm (4.2 inches) in diameter and weighs 2154g (8lb 12oz). There is some corrosion on the object. Given its size and weight it is likely to be a demi culverin ball of the seventeenth century, which were usually 9lb with a 4.5 inch calibre. This was the standard size and weight of this type of ball right through to the nineteenth century.

However, given that the diameter and weight of the object is slightly less than the standard for this type Stephen Bull (in lit. 6.7.2016) suggests that other options might be that it is a ball from a ball mill for crushing minerals or a foreign cannon ball of unidentified type.
