Copper alloy oval plate brooch that has a large raised central cell that contains a black glass conical gemstone. The top of stone is chipped with two conchoidal fractures that emanate from the tip of the stone. On the top of the surrounding plate is a low raised band that runs around the middle and a second raised band that runs around the edge which has the effect of creating two concentric recessed panels both of which retains its original gold gilding.

The reverse has the mounting for the pin which is now encrusted with iron corrosion suggesting that the pin was original made from iron, the catchplate is truncated at its base.
