An incomplete copper alloy headstud brooch of Roman date. The head of the brooch is comprised of rectangular wings the reverse of which acts as an integral double lug hinge mechanism through which the pin is fitted. The loop of the pin remains though the pin proper has been lost to an old worn break. The remains of an attachment loop project from the upper edge of the head.
An integral curved D-sectioned bow extends centrally from between the wings tapering in width to terminate in a worn break. An integral ring and dot style headstud is present at the apex of the bow. A raised central ridge decorates the front of the remaining bow.
The metal has a mid-green patina and is worn. The brooch is 22.2mm long, 13.4mm wide, 4.3mm thick and weighs 3.9g.
Similar examples are illustrated in Hattatt, p.332, fig.191 and are dated to the 2nd Century AD.
