A sherd from the base of a wheel thrown Roman Samian type vessel of uncertain Eastern Gaul ware dating to c AD 40-260. The outer face of the sherd is plain. The sherd comprises of part of the base and part of the lower body of the vessel which is flat. Suggesting use as a dish or shallow bowl. The inside surface of the body is decroated with two circular lines indented to the surface. The fabric is oxidised orange-red colour with gloss slip with fleck of limestone inclusions. The edges show areas of reduced brown colour. The fragment weighs 29.23g. It measures 20.84mm in length, 50.07mm in width and 5.69mm in thickness. The section of base measures 120mm in diameter, 12.66mm in height and 7.67mm in width.
