Early medieval? Copper-alloy mount or spangle, Length 35mm, width 23mm, thickness 2mm, weight 6.01grams.

The object is incomplete and has a rectangular cross section and would have been sub circular in form if intact with a trapezoidal projection at one edge. This projection is largely intact here and is decorated with seven raised lines running vertically (as shown) to the objects edge. To the left intact corner there is a circular suspension hole. This sits above a double raised border running around the edge of what would have been a D shaped plate. Inside this the object has raised decoration consisting of a central, now incomplete, circle which has two ovoid projections, one running to the bottom cente and one to the upper left (as shown). This would have appeared to resemble a propeller like motif if complete. Inside the ovoid motifs is a smaller ovoid raised border. Outside there are two short curved lines running between each ovoid motif with a series of short transverse lines running away from it. The remainder of the field is filled with three sub rectangular raised borders, a large one to the left (as shown) next to the curved motif and two smaller ones in the top corner and upper section (which is incomplete). There are traces of gilding attached to the sides of this raised decoration. The reverse is plain and flat. The object is unusual in form and appears to be some sort of decorative mount. The nearest parallel on the databse is SF7403, a Medieval lead alloy spangle. The decoration on this item would suggest an earlier date and it is possibly Anglo-Saxon.
