Post-medieval, silver, gilded dress fastener. Openwork plate consisting of four circular apertures around a central heart with scrolls to either side, a narrow transverse rib forming a straight edge above the heart and two pierced circular attachment lugs projecting from the lower edge below the heart. In the centre of the upper straight side is a broken, ungilded scar where a missing element, probably a pierced lug forming the eye, has broken off. Gilding on the reverse survives only within the stamped maker's mark, R. Post-medieval eye plates are less commonly found than the dress hooks with which they were presumably used, but other broadly similar examples have been recorded on the PAS database including SWYOR-DBA47D, NMS-201722 (Norfolk HER59800), NMS-922183 (Norfolk HER45401) and HESH-F4A941. Circa 16th century.

Length 13.5mm. Width 17mm. Thickness 2.5mm. Weight 2.1g.
