WEIGHT

Shield shaped lead weight. Both sides of the weight are very worn. The face is decorated with a crude depiction of a single lion, probably facing to the left. On the reverse of the weight is a moulded letter 'W'.

The letter W on the reverse makes this weight very interesting. One other weight with a decoration on the reverse is known, which had a cross pattee in a border and the letters FACTV above, indicating that the weight was made with the authority of the church (Biggs, p39, no.95). The distinction between official and unofficial weights is not entirely clear, although many people see the weights bearing heraldic designs such as three lions, a single lion and crowned lys, as official products. The significance of the letter W on the reverse of this weight is unclear.

Over 50 shield shaped weights from the David Rogers collection were studied, and a mass-distribution plot of their weights revealed a high percentage of them weighing between 105g and 125g. This weight from Saltfleetby weighs 116g, and so falls within the majority trend (Biggs, P35).
