An incomplete lead alloy cloth seal of post-medieval date (c. 1575-1700), likely relating to an immigrant community possibly Dutch.
Description:
The seal is sub-rectangular with a narrow section and is stamped on one surface with the Roman numerals LII (52) within a beaded border. The reverse is blank.
Measurments:22.55mm long, 11.99mm width, 3.77mm thick and 5g
Discussion:
A similar cloth seal is illustrated in Egan (1994) p.174, fig.23, no.95 and is described as a Dutch community tabular seal from Norwich. The numerals on such examples relate to the length of the cloth in yards while the other sides often have the town of orign stamped on the reverse.
Similar cloth seals have also been recorded on the PAS database @: NMS-95CA14 and YORYM-766602.
