A complete, double looped buckle frame of the Post Medieval period, dating from c. AD 1550 - c. AD 1650.

Around 95% of the buckle remains, with only the pin missing, presumed lost in antiquity.

The buckle is oval in plan and D shaped in section. It consists of two D shaped loops separated by a narrow starp bar. The strap bar has been recessed at the top and bottom on the front face. The strap bar has been bent slightly to the right. At the top and bottom of the strap bar is a lobed triangular knop protrusion. On the outer edge of each loop are two moulded rosettes in the centre, with a bilobed knop above and below. The reverse is plain and undecorated, although traces of gold coloured gilding remain on the surface. The object has been bent towards the front face and as a result is slightly concave.

The buckle measures 34.5 mm in length and is 49.3 mm wide. It has a thickness of 2.5 mm and weighs 7.9 g.

The buckle is a mid to dark green in colour with an even surface patina. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil may have resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail.

Similar buckle frames have been published as no. 409 (Whitehead, 1996, p 66) and are considered to be Early Post Medieval in dating (AD 1550 - AD 1650). Other examples have also been recorded on the database including, SOM-CAEBF0, SUSS-5DE3E4, SUSS-D1B448 and WMID-164C36.
