An incomplete copper alloy probable Colchester derivative (Polden Hill) brooch of the Roman period, dating from AD 75 to AD 175.

Approximately 40% of the brooch is present, consisting of the head, bow, incomplete wings and an incomplete catchplate. The spring, pin, most of the catchplate and foot are missing presumed lost in antiquity.

In plan, the brooch is slightly T-shaped, and D-shaped in cross section. The bow head is hump-like, and angular (comma shaped) in profile, with the remains of cylindral wings projecting from either side at the top. There is no decoration on the remains of the wings and at where they meet the bow. The bow has been decorated with two grooves running parallel to each other down the centre of the brooch, however much of the surface patina has been lost and only a small area of deocration remains half way down the brooch. The remains of a probable rearward facing hook, is located at the head of the brooch. The back of the brooch is undecorated, aside from a raised ridge at the base which may be the remains of the catchplate. A semi cylindrical groove is present behind the wings.

The brooch measures 43.5 mm length, is 15.0 mm wide across wings and 4.8 mm thick. It weighs 7.4 grams.

The brooch is a mid to dark green colour, with an uneven patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface.

Similar brooches can be seen in Richard Hattatt's Visual Guide to Ancient brooches (p 300, fig 159). Similar brooches have been recorded on thePAS database as WMID-3FEF37,WMID-B9A0A7, WMID-60DFE3, WMID-983285 and WMID-9A3C43.
