A post-medieval silver coin; a penny of Elizabeth I (AD 1558-1603), uncertain issue, initial mark illegible. Mint of London. Compare North (1991) page 133 - 137, number 1988, 2001 or 2017. The edges are damaged and the coin is pierced at 12 o'clock on the reverse, from the reverse, between the shield and the legend. It is 13mm diameter, 0.5mm thick and 0.25g.

Notes:

This coin does not meet the requirements of the 1996 Treasure Act because although it is pierced in a way which respects the orientation of the reverse cross, pierced coins of this date are found in hoards suggesting that they could re-enter the currency and still function as a coin. Therefore, the piercing alone is not enough evidence to support such coins being considered as Treasure.
