A complete Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) copper-alloy sword pommel cap of the 'cocked hat' type (c. 410-c. 720). The pommel cap is pyramidal in form and sub-rectangular in plan. The underside is deeply hollow. At each end there is an integral pierced attachment lug. One lug is larger than the other and slightly off-centre. The hole in each lug has a diameter of c. 1.1mm.
This pommel cap is corroded with a patchy matt green patina. There is no indication of decoration or surface treatment. A dark grey stain at one end on the underside may be from organic material.
Length: 40.5mm; width: 14.1mm; thickness: 12.0mm. Weight: 14.85g.
The 'cocked hat' pommel is an early Anglo-Saxon type, examples of which can be found illustrated in MacGregor and Bolick (1993, 237-238).
