An incomplete Roman copper-alloy zoomorphic plate horse brooch (AD 100-200).
The nose and the tail end of the brooch are missing. The pin is also missing.
This brooch is flat at the front and rear. It is roughly 'L'-shaped in plan with curving sides. The shape probably represents a form of a stylised with head, neck, body and front leg. At the front, three cells contain the remains of red enamel. A cell at the head is lozenge-shaped. The body has a crescent-shaped cell and at the tail end of the body is a circular cell. The rear face has a pair of 'D'-shaped parallel pieced pin-lugs. The lugs contain an iron axis bar around which is a copper-alloy pin loop. The 'D'-shaped catch-plate is incomplete as the curled-over part that secured the pin-tip is missing.
This brooch has a green patina and the breaks are abraded.
Length: 24.4mm; width: 17.0mm; thickness: 2.2mm; thickness including pin-lugs: 7.7mm. Weight: 2.47g.
