A complete lead or lead alloy weight, of probable Late Medieval to Post Medieval dating (AD 1300 toAD 1800).
The weight is cylindrical in plan, and sub circular in cross section. There is a central circular perforation that transverses the length of the weight.
The perforation has a maximum internal diameter of 9.88mm. The weight has a mid-cream coloured patina. The surface has been abraded, probably caused by movement in the plough soil.
There are many lead weights to be found on the database. The shape and style of this weight could suggest that it is probably a line or fishing weight. A similar weight in form, although with straight sides (WMID-7CF056) was discovered in Staffordshire and suggested as a line weight. This particular parallel is given a broad date range like other weights recorded on the database due to the objects being a functional artefact, and the styles changed little over time. Therefore this example could be of any date from Late Medieval through to Post Medieval (AD 1300 to AD 1800).
The weight measures 36.82mm long, 24.38 mm wide and the walls of the weight have a thickness of 7.65mm. It weighs 106.7 grams.
