A copper alloy penannular brooch dating from the late Roman or Early Medieval period, about AD 400 - 700. It is Fowler Type F1 which has zoomorphic terminals facing back along the frame, which are solid cast, not folded back. The top of the animal heads are decorated with a ring and dot motif containing degraded probable enamel, now a white or pale green colour. The hoop is decorated with groups of half-circumferential grooves on the upper face only. The broch has a grey patina. It is slightly distorted, the terminals overlapping a little. It is 50.6mm long, 50mm wide and 6.7mm thick. 14.44g.
Anna Booth in her 2015 Phd thesis suggests a date range of AD 400 - 700 for Fowler Type F brooches. Compare also West's Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Material, 1998, 9, 8.2.
Notes:
