A complete lead alloy late Early medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian) tongue-shaped strap-end of Thomas' Class E Type 1. The strap end is tongue shaped in plan with heavy raised lead alloy decoration in the classic Winchester style. The attachment end of the strap end is broken around the two rivet holes, and there is a crack across the main body otherwise the strap end is in good condition. The reverse is undecorated. The decoration combines zoomorphic and foliate elements, with a sub-rectangular feline-like head with almond shaped eyes at the top and simplified vine-scroll with looping tendrils below and to the side (Gabor Thomas pers. comm.).
A number of strap fittings, brooches and dress accessories are known in lead from Anglo-Scandinavian England, and they probably represent inexpensive alternatives to more prestigious examples in copper alloy and precious metals. 10th-11th century AD.
