Copper alloy strap end. Cast U shaped or tongue shaped strap end with a slightly thinned inner end with two drilled attachment holes of diameter 2.3mm, one torn. The display face bears a series of deep longitudinal grooves, though these seem to drift from the medial alignment and they might even represent entirely fortuitous damage. If these surface features are accepted as decorative, the object might bear comparison with Thomas Class E Type 3 strap ends. The distribution of these is biased towards the eastern Danelaw and the Irish Sea littoral Viking rule of the 'Kingdom' of York and Dublin over Lindsey, c.865-925, is also thought to be associated with other artefact types such as weights. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-1000.
