Complete base and lower body fragment of a Hat-shaped unguent jar. Blue/green with dark (black) impurities and light iridescent weathering. The circular base, which has a diameter of 14.5mm, is slightly concave at the centre and it has a pontil scar which is an irregular rectangle in plan (dimensions being 7.5 x 5.5mm). The body expands out from the missing rim and is slightly convex on one side and largely straight-sided on the other (asymmetrical). At the neck, the rim begins to become horizontal but no part of its edge survives. It is 22.7mm high and the walls are 1mm in thickness, it weighs 6.66g. It is similar to an example from Colchester (Cool and Price 1994, 116 861 fig. 7.10). Unguent jars of this form are unusual and are likely to date from the late 1st-2nd century

Class: unguent jar
