A complete copper alloy medieval harness pendant. It is shaped like a small scallop shell with a concave reverse and convex outer face. The outer face is decorated with three engraved lines, representing the grooves of the shell. Extending from the upper end is a small suspension loop, sitting at a right-angle to the body of the pendant. It survives in very good condition with a shiny green patina.
Clark (1995, 67, fig.50, no.72) illustrates a very similar example and suggests that the design may have connections with contemporary pilgrrimage imagery, which often features the scallop shell - the badge of St. James (ibid., 69). Pendants like these probably date to the 13th or 14th century.
