A small silver strap-end of late Anglo-Saxon date. The object is roughly rectangular in form, with one end split for attachment to a strap and the other end terminating in a snub-nosed animal's head. The attachment end is incomplete, but appears to preserve the lower circumference of a pair of circular rivet-holes. The animal head terminal is slightly damaged around the eyes and nostrils, but it has a lozenge-shaped recess on the forehead and oval-shaped ears with a central triangle motif, giving a pointed appearance. The main field of the upper surface is divided into two sub-rectangular panels, probably once containing decoration but the condition now precludes identification. Behind these panels is an incised palmette motif.
Notes:
This strap-end resembles Thomas' (2003) Class A Type 1, characterised by animal-head terminals and tapering or convex-sided plates (Thomas 2003, 2). These are the most common type of strap-end, and there are numerous examples on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database (cf. SOM-7C0D84 and SF-71A2F1) and in museum collections. It is shorter than typical examples, but still has typical features like the animal-head terminal, split attachment end with two rivet-holes, and palmette motif beneath these. This type of strap-end has been dated broadly to the mid eighth to mid tenth centuries.
Conclusion:
The object fulfils the Treasure Act (1996) in that it is more than 300 years old and has a precious metal content exceeding 10%.
Date: Mid eighth to mid tenth centuries.
