Lead stylus or pencil. Sub-triangular object with knife cut edges suggesting it to have been cut from cast lead sheet of structural gauge. The wider end is roughly rounded by three cuts, and a hole of diameter c.2mm is drilled through it, probably to permit suspended wear. The object tapers towards a point, and is patinated overall, a surface disrupted by light later damage. The manufacture of styli from materials available on a building site is a common feature of their use, and may betoken functional literacy amongst craftsmen. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1500.
