Treasure Number: 2016 T344
Period: Undiagnostic
Description: An undiagnostic silver cross pendant. A plain cruciform pendant with a transverse attachment loop. The arms are of equal length and have a rounded rectangular cross-section. The arm with the attachment loop is bent slightly to one side at the join.
Dimensions:
Length: 22 mm
Width: 15 mm
Thickness: 5 mm
Weight: 2.2 g
Discussion: There are several examples of plain cross pendants on the PAS database. Many have been identified as Medieval (such as PUBLIC-10E0ED, NCL-26E3D1 and NMS-3E1091), but others have been identified as Post-Medieval or cannot be dated (eg SF-D55F02).
The pendant has been assessed by the Lloyd de Beer and Judy Rudoe at The British Museum and in their opinion it cannot be securely dated.
Conclusion: The pendant cannot be securely dated to pre-1716 and therefore falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.
Subsequent action after recording: Returned to finder after being declared not Treasure
